A Review: Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold

The foldable phone market continues to grow and Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold is an intriguing entry into the space. Intriguing because even in my Hispanic community (en Nuevo Méjico) is a gran admirador of foldables. Despite a relatively new technology, I have seen quite a number of them with my friends and family.

Anyhow, Google combines the latest and greatest hardware with its AI-powered software for it to stand out, but does it?

·       Design & Build

At first glance, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s design feels refined and purposeful.

Its 6.3-inch cover display provides a familiar smartphone experience when folded, but the real star is the expansive 8-inch internal display. The OLED screens boast a 120Hz refresh rate, delivering smooth visuals in both modes.

Sleek and slightly slimmer than its competitors, it’s designed with a focus on portability and durability, weighing about 283g and measuring 12mm thick when folded.

The phone’s hinge mechanism is robust, giving a smooth yet sturdy feel when transitioning between modes. Speaking of which, this Pixel 9 Pro Fold and other foldables are built for a niche audience who really needs multiple big screens for multi-tasking.

I am one of those multitaskers. I sort out my internet bills and needs by calling número de Xfinity (customer service tailored for Spanish speakers like myself) while I read the latest tech news on the other half of the screen. These big screens certainly are a plus for me.

While foldables have had their fair share of durability concerns, Google has put effort into reinforcing the build here. However, whether that’s enough to eliminate long-term wear remains to be seen.

–        Display Quality

The outer and inner displays offer crisp, vibrant visuals, enhanced by Google’s attention to color accuracy and sharpness. The larger internal display makes multitasking more seamless, but it’s not just about size.

The display is responsive, with HDR10+ support, making gaming and streaming content more immersive. This is a solid offering, competing well against Samsung’s Z Fold series.

–        Performance & Multitasking

Under the hood, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is powered by the Tensor G4 chip backed by 12GB of RAM.

It has storage options up to 512GB. This ensures smooth performance across various tasks, especially when managing multiple apps simultaneously.

The processing power is noticeable when flipping between tasks or running resource-heavy applications, with the 5000mAh battery offering a full day’s usage on moderate activity.

Google’s AI capabilities are fully integrated into the phone’s experience, from predictive text in apps to optimizing background processes. Multitasking is a key benefit here, as users can split the screen or run pop-up windows easily, leveraging the large foldable display.

–        Camera Experience

Despite a slightly smaller sensor compared to the standard Pixel 9 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold still impresses with its photography capabilities.

The 48MP main camera produces detailed, well-balanced images, with Google’s AI playing a significant role in refining the shots post-capture. It’s paired with a 10.8MP ultrawide and a 10.8MP telephoto lens offering 5x optical zoom. The Super Res Zoom extends up to 20x without too much image degradation.

Google has introduced some fun features, such as the “Made you Look” mode, which uses animated characters on the outer display to keep kids focused during photos. Magic Editor, a feature powered by AI, allows users to adjust backgrounds or expand cropped shots with ease.

–        Battery Life

Battery life is a key consideration for any foldable smartphone, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold does a solid job here with its 5000mAh battery. It easily lasts a full day for me on moderate use, though more demanding tasks will drain the battery quicker.

Fast charging at 30W ensures you won’t be tethered to a charger for long, but the absence of ultrafast charging seen in some competitors is worth noting.

–        Software & Features

Running on Android 14, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold benefits from Google’s latest software innovations.

Exclusive features for Pixel users, such as enhanced voice commands and personalized suggestions, add to the phone’s appeal. The foldable experience is clearly considered, with apps and the user interface adapting well to different screen configurations.

The standout software feature remains Google’s AI integration, which not only improves performance but also brings new capabilities to photos, voice typing, and general usage.

Final Thoughts

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is an excellent foldable, with a premium design, strong performance, and innovative AI-powered features.

With its Tensor G4 chip, 12GB RAM, 48MP camera, and large foldable display, it delivers a top-tier experience for those wanting the latest tech.

While the camera is slightly less impressive compared to the standard Pixel 9 Pro, and questions about durability linger, it’s clear Google is committed to refining the foldable experience.
